Rodents

Folsom, California
November is a great month.  Color in the trees, crisp, cool weather, visitors, pie and turkey.  But without some thoughtful preparation, Rodents could be the fall of your plans this Autumn.  So listen up, there are some things you can do to stay a stride ahead of Rodents as winter approaches.

1.       Inspect your property.  Take a look at the structure, noticing any broken screens, ill-fitting pipes, door jams with no weather stripping, broken windows or holes in the stucco. Any space large enough for them to get their tiny heads through becomes a potential entryway for Rodents.  Look at the landscape around your structure. Large trees, although beautiful and shade bearing may also provide a Rodent expressway to your roof.  Also look for piles of debris as they provide a natural harborage for Rodents to abide in until they can make their way inside the structure.

2.      Exclude Access.  Once you are confident that there are currently no Rodents inside your structure, make sure to plug and seal all potential entry points you find. Steel wool works very well as a ‘plug’ for holes as Rodents won’t chew through it.  Weather stripping doors will close any gaps presenting an access point for Rodents.  Button it up and it will be far less attractive to Rodents.

3.      Keep things Clean.  Rodents are drawn to food and pet food is a menu favorite.  Storing open bags of dry dog and cat food is like ringing the dinner bell for Rodents. In fact, any place they can get a good midnight snack is where they’ll show up.  That’s why keeping floors, counters, cupboards and preparation surfaces clean will eliminate much of the temptation for Rodents to choose your home as their all-night diner.

Although these tips will certainly help keep Rodents at bay, nothing is fool-proof.  If you find that Rodents have already invaded your home, make sure to address the problem immediately.  A Rodent issue left unaddressed can lead to fire hazards as they chew through electrical wiring in homes and automobiles. This damage can cost thousands of dollars to repair. As well, the mere presence of Rodents is a health risk due to the insects and bacteria they carry on their bodies.

If you find that you have a problem with Rodents in your home or structure, it is best to consult a licensed Pest Control Professional for help.

A (little) Bit of Rat Humor

Two rats were munching on garbage in an alley when one engages a discussion about a new restaurant.
“I was in that new restaurant across the street,” said one. “It’s so clean! The kitchen is spotless, and the floors are gleaming white. There is no dirt anywhere–it’s so sanitary that the whole place shines.”
“Please,” said the other rat frowning. “Not while I’m eating!” -unknown

Rodent Trivia:

Rodentia is an order of mammals also known as rodents, characterised by two continuously growing incisors in the upper and lower jaws which must be kept short by gnawing.[-wikipedia
